Magdalena Pokrzyńska – is an ethnologist and sociologist. Her scientific interests are associated with the issues of borderland, identity, social memory, heritage and traditionalism, and broadly understood folk culture. She is the author of over 60 scientific and popular science publications. Magdalena loves nature and traditional agriculture she runs an apiary, she is passionate about early music and Central European folklore and handcraft.


Master of Arts in Ethnology (University of Wrocław), Ph.D. in Sociology (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin) based on the dissertation Tradition and the Subjective Development of the Regional Community. Based on Research Among Poles from Bukovina.

Her scientific interests focus on the issues of borderlands, identity, social memory, heritage and traditionalism, the formation of collective life in Western Poland after 1945, and broadly understood folk culture. She conducts interdisciplinary field research, collaborating with German, Polish, Romanian and Ukrainian researchers.

Organizer of numerous scientific conferences and events popularizing science (including the cyclical international conference Bukovinian Scientific Meetings and Bukovinian Science Festival). Implementer of many research projects in Poland, Romania and Ukraine. These include, among others. a series of analyses devoted to the culture and language of Poles in Bukovina and Bukowińscy in Poland, research on the memory of the borderlands, research in the beekeeping and winemaking environment.

Awarded several times by the Rector of the University of Zielona Góra for scientific and organizational achievements (including at the request of the Council of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University for an outstanding doctorate), awarded the Honorary Badge of Sybirak, the Medal of Remembrance awarded by the Association of Sybiraks, the honorary badge of Merit for Polish Culture and the Pro Patria Medal.

Author of over 60 scientific publications in Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Serbia as well as various popularizing texts. The most important studies are: Bukowińscy in Poland. Sociological study of the development of a regional community, Zielona Góra 2010; Mothers of Sybiraks: fate and memory. Polish women exiled to the depths of the Soviet Union (co-authors: D. Bazuń, I. Kaźmierczak-Kałużna), Zielona Góra 2012, Wine and Bacchic tradition of Zielona Góra. Studies and socio-cultural sketches, Zielona Góra 2019 (co-authors: D. Angutek, A. Kinal, J. Leszkowicz-Baczyński, A. Urbaniak), Testimony of a disappearing heritage. Polish language in Bukovina: Romania – Ukraine, Warsaw 2018 (co-authors: Helena Krasowska, Lech Aleksy Suchomłynow).

In private, a nature lover and farmer. A graduate of the Beekeeping Technical School in Pszczela Wola, she runs her own apiary with her husband, thus continuing a multi-generational family tradition. In the field of culture, she is passionate about early music and Central European folklore, and also does handicrafts when time allows.
